Who links to me?

SPAM???

(¯`•Stormraven•._) wrote: define spam?

So you want to know about SPAM? All right.

Did you know?

The word SPAM is not an acronym at all. It comes from a famous “Monty Python” sketch wherein a customer at a cafe is bombarded with SPAM, the only item on the menu. A chorus of Vikings revel with the song: “SPAM, SPAM, SPAM, SPAM, SPAM, lovely SPAM, wonderful SPAM.”

Additionally, SPAM is a Hormel product named after “spicy ham” that served as the basis of the sketch.

So what exactly is this thing called SPAM on places like email, blogs, and message boards?

What is SPAM?

That depends on what you are really asking.

SPAM is illeagle, not only is it illeagle, but it is a criminal act, an FBI reportable offense, that can result in a $25,000 fine, and for the worst offenders a prison sentance.

What is SPAM?

SPAM is the posting of links to illeagle web-sites, such as those promoting Porn or drugs; usually through emails, blog comments, or “guest posts” on message boards.

HOWEVER:

SPAM has come to mean many other things as well… and today is used very losely to discribe a wide variaty of interrnet activities.

Most of us today, know SPAM as the posting of multi-links to a single web site…SEE THIS POST HERE FOR AN EXAMPLE… this type of SPAM is usually done by Bloggers hoping to raise their blog ranks through pingbacks and inbound links… like the “true” SPAM it too, is an FBI reportable offence (admins getting this type of posting on their site can go to the FBI website, and file a report of “online harasment”)

the type of SPAM you are refereing to is known as “friendly” SPAM… this is when an admin of a blog or forum invites members to post comments that are totally pointless and usually only one or two words such as:

LOL!

)

Got Ya!

I Won!

so… does that answer your question?

Should members be forced to post?

This thread brings up a good topic, on which I shall make my own feelings known: Should members be forced to post?  It aplies to message boards and chat forums.

I was once an active member on a board…one of it’s mods even…I posted an average of 20-30 posts a week, tried to stay active on every board and most threads, talked with all the members, went and invited all my friends to join (ending up bringing in about 25 new members), this went on for about 6 months, than my teenaged brother ended up in the hospital with a heart problem 2 days before Christmas in 2005, and I left a post telling them (the admin and members) that I’d not be around for a few weeks, cause I didn’t have time for a message board when I had to take care of my little brother…well long story short, my brother got some of the best doctors around and is doing fine now; a total of 6 weeks past before I got online again…I went to the board to tell them that my brother was okay now and that I would be able to return, and was shocked to find that I had been banned and could not sign in…I emailed the admin and asked if she knew about it and how I could sing in, and she sent me a very mean, nasty, and rude email, accuseingh me of ruining her board because I stopped posting, she said since her board was “obviously not important to” me anymore that she had no choice but to ban me. I was shocked and stunned. I couldn’t believe it. Later my 25+ friends who had joined, got in touch with me and told me that, she had banned each of them as well over the next few weeks, her reason, was that they had gone over a week without posting and therefore “did not care about” her or her board. This continued on for several months, until she finaly had banned over 50 members, and than sent us all an email saying that she was forced to delete the board because everyone left. That was the weirdest experiance I think I’ve ever had with any forum I’ve ever joined.

For me, on my own boards, I do have a posting rule. I ask members if they are going to join please at least post hen they get the chance to stop by and read, at least to say hi if nothing else. If a year goes by (365 days since the member’s last post) I email them and ask if they still want to be members or if they’d like to un-join. Most times they come back post a couple of times, say they’d deleted their cookies and lost the link back and were glad I’d emailed them asking them to return. So far I’ve never had to delete any of my members as a result.

Internet forums… Why I like them

i LIKE BOTH…ON THE BIG BOARDS YOU MEET AND TALK WITH THOUSANDS OF DIFFERANT PEOPLE EACH TIME YOU VISIT (LIKE EbAY COMMUNITY)…

hey, I hit the caps button…I hate that…fixed now, finish my post…

On small boards you can really get to know the people, and make some close friends,

anyways, I like them both, I think that all forums provide something good, so I try to check out as many as I have time too.

Why Do You Hate Americans/Brits?

I was just reading this:

Why you hate Americans/Brits

I see no logical reason to hate either side… both have their good points, both have their bad points… we should all learn to live together and agree to disagree without being disagreeable about it.

Have forums lost their pull factor?

I’d say yes, and no, both…

I think it’s that there are so many forums that people join a ton of them, and than only stay active on 1 or 2 that they like best.

How I Found Proboards

last summer, I read all the HP books for the first time, and than set out to find a fansite devoted to my fave character in the book : Prof. Snape…I ended up finding thousands of HP Proboard forums, nearly all of the RPG’s, which is not my cup of tea, others were fan-fic sites, again, not my cup of tea either…I was just looking for a place were fans of Snape could hang out and yap about life…finally I found Silly’s Shrine of Snape…by far the coolest HP ProBoard ever built…after hanging out with them for a couple of months I acidently clicked the button on the bottom of the page that sent me to ProBoards home page…that was the first time I realized that “Hey! I can start one of these places too!”…so I did, and now here I am
