Anyone got any ghostly advice?

well, I came on here today, because I am working on my novel… the one for this chalenge this time! it’s a ghost story, about a haunted house with several assorted ghosts living in it.

the “prime ghost” is the ghost of a black cat

the secondary ghost is a spirit possessed tree in the front yard

other ghosts include a hell hound, a bride, and a group of “little people” (not yet sure what to call these guys, they are somewhat like drawves or gnomes or leprechuans)

basicly I’m looking for any ideas, anyone might have, that they think would be useful in writing a ghost story; I’m looking for ghost cliches, urban ghost stories, how ghosts came to be, why do they haunt the places they haunt, how did they become ghosts, how can they escape from being a ghost, why might they haunt one person and not another, why are some ghosts goos while others are bad, how do ghosts kill people and why, and just about any ghostly idea you can come up with.

Update: The Stolen House of Maine

Interesting thing happened today. We got home about 2 hours earlier than usual. We may now have a suspect in for who has been moveing stuff around the yard and opening the hen gate these last couple of weeks.

For those of you who remember the “Stolen House of Maine”  Our house, the one that so long ago was the start of the years of harassment that our family has had to withstand. It all started in 2001 with a house. Our house, the one that made front page news the day we came home to find an empty lot: our house as my long time readers already know, was cut in half and than moved 50 miles away where it was sold to a man who in turn sold it to something else. This resulted in a grueling 3 year court battle between us and the pastor who stole our house: Pastor Bernard Elliot of The Arundel Christian Tabernacle. Since the court battle we had not heard from him, but today, his wife Evelyn, stopped out front of our “still houseless” yard. We do not know why she was here, she drove off when I started down the driveway to see what she wanted. It dose raise the question, of just who exactly it is behind the harassment we have recieved from our very “religious” town manager,  Jim Thomas . (and ours is not the first they have done this to, they have a long history of doing this!)

I just have to wonder why are the Elliot’s back? What do they want with us? Haven’t they done enough damage already? Why won’t they leave us alone? These people are the ones who lefts pictures of guns on our door, way back in the summer of 2002. The Elliot’s are the ones who paint balled our car. They are the ones who took an axe to signs that stood on our land. They are the ones that caused us to need police protection for 3 long and terrifying years. Three years that my family spent in such terror that we dared not go to the store, because these people were stalking us, we meet them everywhere we went. That was yearws ago. We thought they had stopped, but when they did, that’s when the town manager and his crew started harassing us instead. We had thought that the two things, these two very differant episodes of unexplained harassment had been two seperate incedents. Now it seems that they are together, one and the same that the harssment from the town has been nothing more than an extention of the harsement from the Elliot’s.

Why? Whay are they doing this? What reason could they possibly have for this torture?

I just logged in for the day. First thing I always do is check comments in queue waiting for moderation. Today there were only 2 comments wating for me to approve them. After reading and approving them I checked the spam comment list to see there were ant comments that got stuck in with the spam ones. About 1 or 2 comments get shifted into the spam section and have to be moved to the comment section, so I always check. Well today I got this message:

Well, if it isn’t a 458 that’s following me around it’s a 666. What is it with these two numbers anyways? Seems like every day one or the other shows up somewhere and sticks out like a sore thumb at me.

Religion Brings Out the Worst in People

This is the point I was trying to make on a religion thread about a month ago, but people were so caught up in “my church is THE ONE true church, the rest of you are gonna burn” that I don’t think anyone even read my post.

I grew up in a religion crazed family with 264 members. Of them 80% where Mormons proud to be desended from on of the founding families, and lived with great expectations that God himself couldn’t stand up to. The result is, that today we have a broken family. The only conversations are bitter and filled with hate…most of that hate in the form of threats quoted from religious texts (Bible, B of M, etc)….

here’s the thing that gets me:
all 100% of the 264 family members regardless of faith, both the Christian and the non-Christian “claim” to follow the teachings of Jesus, wither they believe him to be Son of God or a prophet or a just wise teacher….so why than, do they teach doctrins of punishment and damnation? Didn’t Jesus teach love in all things, love your enemy, help the poor, be a peacemaker? Why if Jesus taught such simple things, like love and peace, why do he people who claim to follow those teachings not practice what they themselves are telling other to do?

oh well, I guess they just enjoy fueding about religion. I have come to the conclusion that they like to feel superior than other faiths, it gives them a bit of power or so they think, and gives them the right to bully the rest of the family. I have stopped trying to understand the family’s religious battles anymore. My hope is that someday they well learn to disagree without being disagreeable.

This topic poses an interesting question actually. Some people say God created everything, others point to Big Bang…I wonder, what if it was both? What if God created us and He used the Big Bang to create us?

Or how about this…me being a writer and creator of 3 universes and over 700 characters makes me question this theory:

what if the creature we call “God” is really just a writer, like me or Stephen King or whoever else, right? Okay, so one day, the man named God decides to write a book, about a planet he calls earth and alien creatures he calls humans…if it was true that God created us and as some religions teach, that God knows everything that is going to happen before it happens, because he’s “the author of life” (as some preachers call him), than isn’t than true by that logic, that we do not exist at all and are nothing more than a figment of the imagination of a writer who makes us do and say whatever he wants us to do and say….

weird theory I know, but I’ve questioned it for years ever since I heard a preacher say that God was the author of all things and that we do his will…I asked him, than why should we bother to do anything at all, and than questioned creation against his teachings, and that’s how I came up with the above creation theory.

Well, you know me, I have to turn everything into a writing course, so, this is your next writing excercise.

Cathedrals,Alters,Shrines,and Sacred Places

Have you a cathedral to go to? Don’t roll your eyes and say-”I would never set foot inside of  a church”. I didn’t ask you to enter a building built by the hands of man. The Great Spirit is the Creator of all things, all life comes from our Divine Master. Yet,why is it that when it comes to worshipping our Creator,we build a great big fancy building,name it after a man (the church of saint so and so,the shrine of founder so and so,ect.),and than say: “You’ll go to hell if you don’t worship MY God of MY religion and in MY building.”?

Who is YOUR God?

If God was God than there would only be one God,the God of all people,not the God of this religion or the God of that religion. Why do you say that God is YOUR God-when did you buy Him and at what store-and why did you lock Him up in YOUR building and throw away the key? How can anyone claim that our Creator can only talk to certian people of certian religions and no one else in the world? And how can anyone claim that our Creator can only talk to you inside of these great stone prisons and nowhere else? Yes,that’s right prisons,for that is what all churches,temples,cathedrals,and synagogs are: prisons where men think that they can hold God captive,locked away inside of a dungon,were they can order God around and tell God what to do. That is what a church is,nothing less and nothing more.

Think about it–do you realy believe that you are going to go to hell if you worship your Creator in the wrong building ????? How silly can you get? But that’s what each and every church,Christian and non-Christian alike,asks you to believe.
When I ask if you have a cathedral to go to,I don’t mean a building built by the hands of man,built to snare and decieve–no,I mean a wooded lot,a quiet beach,a quiet brook,a flower garden,a country meadow,a local park,that big rock in front of your house,even that old vacant lot behind the junk yard–anywhere,anyplace where you can be alone and worship your Creator without being disturbed. Now,I relieze that many of you live in the big city and places like this are rare and few,but for those of you that do have a place like this available-why aren’t you useing it? And no matter were you live or how cramped your living conditions are,you can always find someplace–even if it’s a closet. My point is,you can worship the Great Spirit anywhere,at any time of any day. You don’t need a church building or a priest,and it doesn’t have to be Sunday (or Saterday-depending on your faith).
I look at church buildings,the big and the small,the Christian and non-Christian,and I see beautiful works of art, marvolus cut stone, exquisit carved wood, grand white pillers, tall stately steples, meticulous stain glass windows, expensive paintings, eloborate statues, cushioned pews, sparkleing gold plating, 20 foot ceilings –and I think amazing, beautiful, wounderful, but where is God? All I can see are things carved and painted by man-I don’t see anything made by God, not one single tree, not the sky, no birds, and I can’t even see God’s creation out the windows because they are either in the roof or made of colored glass. Where are the trees that God made to protect us from the sun? Where are the clouds that God put over our heads? Where are the birds that God gave us to sing praises along with? Where are the flowers that God decorated our lives with? Where is the grass and soft moss that God gave us to kneel on when we prayer? Where is the breeze that God gave us to mess up our hair and remind us not to be vain? Why do men try to steal God and all of His glory lock him up in a cage and replace Him with somthing cold and fake?
The Great Spirit created all things, for all men, not just for one or two. The whole world is one great big cathedral, why waste it? Should we not treat the world as our Creator intended–as a sacred cathedral? Find someplace quiet and still, someplace peacful and undistracted by material things. Go there and go there often,go there to pray and to sing and to worship and give glory to your Creator. It is very important that you make a deep strong connection with your Creator,that you are at ease praying to and talking with and worshipping your Creator,for this is the core of Witchcraft,the very heart of it. Alone you can do nothing, by yourself you have no power. It is through the gifts of your Creator that you can preform “magic”. You must become one with the Creator,you use the power of the Great Spirit,for you have no powers of your own. But guide your motives well, for the Great Spirit is all encomasing and all knowing,and knows why you do the things that you do. If you go seeking the Creator to gain magic powers, than you will come up empty handed, for the Great Spirit does not reward vainity, foolishness, or pride. Remember, you gain nothing if you gain the world but lose your soul. 

Cathedrals, Alters, Shrines, and Sacred Places II

What about an alter? Do you have an alter? Why? Why not? Do you even know what an alter is?

 Let’s start with what an alter isn’t. An alter in not a place to display statues. You don’t cast spells at an alter, nor is it a place to store or “display” your tools. You don’t put “magic circles” around alters. (Very few Witches actualy believe in or use magic circles, that’s just another Hollywood gimick. Most Wiccas do use magic circles, but they are not often Witches.)

An alter is a small object low to the ground, so as to require you to kneel. An alter is were you kneel to prayer, and to burn your sacrifices. Now for many this brings up images of white bearded old men slaughtering lambs or young girls on a mound of stones–and while the Bible and the many famouse ancient religions it promoted, did use alters for that purpose, very few still do this today. 
Today, alters are usely thought of as a long low wooden table in a church were rows of people kneel, while waiting for a priest to bless them– while this to is an acurate discription of an alter, again it is not the only one.
For most people alters are used as a place to kneel and pray, while burning incense. Alters may consist of any manner of low table-like items: a mound of rocks,  a stack of bricks, two or three cinder blocks with a two by four laying across them, a small coffee table, a tractor tire filled with dirt, or even a tree stump. Some alters are covered with an “alter cloth” , but most are left plain. Nearly all alters have candles on them and/or a place to burn incense. Some have “prayer boxes”-small boxes made to hold a slip of paper on which you write a prayer request. Many (both individuals and churches) decorate their alter for various holidays (holy days), useing such things as flowers, leaves, or evergreens depending of the season. Nearly everyone who kneels to pray at an alter also believes that you must humble yourself before your Creator and have a veil, shawl, or cloth over your head (men, women, and children alike)– this is true of nearly every religion: Hindu, Jewish, Muslim, Buddist, Catholic, and even several Protasent Christian churches.
Wiccas and Wiccans (not to be confused with Witches) have their own “new age” type of “alter”, where they display their sword and wand and set up statues of various deities. Often they do not use their “alters” to kneel and pray, but rather use it as a counter to mix potions and cast spells. They usualy put magic circles around their “alters”: for outdoor “alters” the circle may be drawn in the ground with a stick or laid out in stone. For indoor “alters” the magic circle may be a peice of yarn laid on the floor,or something as elaborate as the floor itself being made of mosaic tile with a magic circle being “built-in” the floor. Some Wiccas simply buy a round rug and put their “alter” in the middle of it to save time. While both Wiccas and Wiccans call these tables alters, they are not, as an alter is definded as a sacred place to kneel and pray and burn offerings. These things that they are calling alters are actualy closer to being workbenches or shrines, depending on how they are used.

A workbench is a low table on which spells are cast and potions are mixed, while a shrine is a table on which sacred items are displayed. While Witches do use both workbenches and shrines, neither is ever truely an alter.
Often Witches, Wiccas, Christian, and non-Christian religons will decorate their alters. While there is nothing wrong with decorating your alter, all to often, people become so caught up in the decorations that they end up forgetting to kneel and pray. It is unfortunate, but it happens all the time. Let’s take a look at most Christian churches on Easter Sunday: the alter is beautifully laid out with a gold embriodered white silk cloth, palm leaves, white lilies, and a wooden cross; the people come in and they ooh and ahh at the wounderful decorations, they shake hands with and congradulating the decorator for doing such a great job, the minaster spends several minuntes eloquently thanking the decorator before begining his sermon, the decorator beams with pride, and…ought oh!… there’s that sinnful word… pride. You know that wicked evil thing that preachers say well send you straight to hell. The decorator is puffed up in pride, the minister is proud to have such a fine decorator in his congregation, and the members are proud to be in such a beautiful building. Now on the surface pride about the nice decorations may not seem like a sin, but let’s look deeper. On Monday morning one man from the church is at work telling a coworker about the wounderful decorations at his church this Easter, the coworker comments: “Oh,they couldn’t have been THAT good, the one’s at our church were MUCH better, WE hired a professional to decorate at our church.” Soon the two are in a bitter arguement over whose church looks better, before long they start finding faults with the other’s church-

“Your church is too small”

“Your pastor is too fat”

“Yeah,well your pastor is too old.”

 ”Old! You wanna talk old,look at that dingy building you call a church, looks like it’s about to cave it on the lot of ya-I hope it does-it’ll be a blessing to get rid of one of Satan’s buildings”

…and the fight goes on and on and on, resulting in both workers hating each other, hateing the other’s religion. In earlier times such fights would have resulted in “Witch trials”, church burnings, hangings, and stonings–all because of a little bit of “innocent” pride over a few decorations on the alter. And one more thing to think on: while everyone was looking at the decorations and thinking how nice they were, how many people remembered to kneel at the alter and pray?  Isn’t that what the alter is for?

So, you see, it’s easy for people to become distacted, filled with foolish and vain pride, and forget all about the Creator that they had originaly started out to worship. Instead of worshipping and praying they ending up full of vainity and pride and started fighting with one another, and never once gave any thought to the Creator at all. 
Now, I’m not saying that decorations are bad, quite the contrary–decorations, if used properly can set the mood for a beautiful prayer ritual (service), that lifts the spirit and helps bring people closer to the Great Spirit. So, what went wrong at that church meeting mentioned above? Well, first of all while there is nothing wrong with thanking the decorator, the minister made a pulpit speach out of thanking the person and this filled them with elevated pride, his speech also filled the hearts of the congregation with pride, soon eveyone is walking around saying, “What a great church this is, it’s the best church in the world, it’s the only church worth going too, hey, it must be the ONLY church with God in it, all other churches are of Satan- boy am I glad I’m here and not at one of Satan’s false churches– I have to get people in this church, I have to get rid of all those other churches”–you see how easily one thought leads to another? This is why pride is so dangerous that it is actually a sin. Pride quickly elevates into hate, and hate soon becomes distruction–and all because of a simple decoration on the alter.
It is my belief that the simpler something is,the less likely people are to become vain and start fighting, and the more likely people will be able to communicate effectivly with their Creator. And this is the true purpose of the alter: to talk with the Creator–to kneel and pray. Prayers are often,so much better when uncluttered by fancy surroundings,though this is not always the case. Sometimes it is the sheer magnitude of the decorations that sends one to thier knees in prayer–such as with the large gold alters of India and Tibet,with red and yellow draperies,strings of glass beads,and huge carved stones. Such alters seem to come from another world,and inspire even the athiest to fall to thier knees in awe,because all you have to do is look at this alter to know that is is a very sacred object were people come to pray.
So,keep all these things in mind when decorating your alter and always ask yourself,how will I (or others) be affected by these decorations? Will decorating it bring me closer to my Creator, or well the decorations distact me (them)? There is no right or wrong way to decorate your alter,so long as it is still able to funtion as an alter.

The Lord’s Cathedral

The Lord’s Cathedral
I have come to Your cathedral Lord,to ask Your blessing on this sacred place;
I do not go to a building,Lord,for what man can hold You captive in his great stone walls?
There is no beauty in man’s cathedrals,that could compair to that of Your own;
For You have built this cathedral with Your words and mortared it with Your love;
So here I stand in Your cathedral,Lord,the trees above my head and the wind at my face
The brook and the birds areYour instaments here,and sing Your continual praises loud and clear-
Unlike the cathedral of man,their songs are not reserved for Sunday alone,but everyday for all to hear.
No paintings by man hang on it’s walls,for You have colored it with ferns and mosses and flowers in full bloom-
The colors here no brush of man,will ever match,for Your glory is everywhere.
I thank Thee dear Lord for leading me to Your Great Cathedral,not built for the glory of man-
but for Thine own glory and Your’s alone.
