Here is a thread I started on LuLu.com, copying it to my blog:
I’m thinking of maybe writing a ghost story, with a haunted house. Well, I’m not just thinking about it, I’m actually doing it.
Anyways, I thought we should have a thread where all of us planning to write ghost stories and haunted house tales and such, can gather and swap ideas, and I couldn’t find one already made, so I am making one, and so here it is.
Here’s a few questions to get your creative brainwaves flowing. Why not jump and and share your ghost stoy helpers here?
So, what’s everyone planning to write about?
Why did you choose to write a ghost story?
How do you plan to use ghosts in your story?
Will your story be set in a haunted house or no? If yes, what do you think when you think haunted house?
What cliches about ghosts do you think every ghost story should have in it?
What cliches do you feel every ghost story should avoid?
Have you ever considered turning a ghost story into a play?
How do you add suspence to your story?
What scary details do you add to scare the pants off your readers?
and to get everyone started I guess I’ll go first and answer my own questions. Here it goes:
So, what’s everyone planning to write about?
I started out writing a novel, but than it wanted to be more of a set of short stories instead of a straight novel, so I changed it to a novel in which the main character comes in a started reading various short stories, and now it’s a set of short stories that take place within a novel. Is that weird? Has anyone ever done this or heard of any books written like this before?
Why did you choose to write a ghost story?
Don’t know really. The idea just popped into my head and begged me to start writting it. It just happens to be about a haunted house and a bunch of strange ghosts are living there and each one has their own story to tell.
How do you plan to use ghosts in your story?
My ghosts are “the good guys” and the humans that come into their homes are the “invaders or bad guys”. So on the surface the ghosts seem like villains, when in fact they are not and they think that the living who are invading their space are the villains, instead…. when I word it like that it sound kind of like Beetlejuice, but it’s not like Beetlejuice, so that’s weird.
Will your story be set in a haunted house or no? If yes, what do you think when you think haunted house?
yes, or yes… more than one haunted house actually, because it is a set of short stories, and each one takes place in a differant haunted area, not always a house. One has a haunted cave and another has a haunted tree.
I think of a big old Victorian mansion when I think haunted house. High on a hill, outside of town. On the seaside so that it can be weathered a nice old dingy grey.
What cliches about ghosts do you think every ghost story should have in it?
cold air when the ghost walks in
creaks and other sounds of an old settleing house
ghosts that do not realize they are ghosts… I love those
Twilight Zone endings that don’t really end
What cliches do you feel every ghost story should avoid?
ghosts that walking around in chains… it works for Dickens but not today
ghosts made of green glowing ectoplasma… I don’t now, I ust hate icky greem glowing goopy ghosts… way too cheesy
Have you ever considered turning a ghost story into a play?
Half way through writing this book, I thought to myself, hey, this would make a great set of plays for a grade school to put on for Halloween, so now I’m writing 2 differant versions of it, one as a novel and one as a stage play. I’m just being twice as hard on myself now
How do you add suspence to your story?
hmmm… I’m puzzleing over that one and wondering if I have any suspence in my book at all. I think my characters need more “at risk” situations.
What scary details do you add to scare the pants off your readers?
questioning this one as well, I don’t think my book is scary enough yet, needs a lot of work to get it to reach my scarymeter standards, but it’s still got a ways to go before I’m done with it, so, it’s okay for now.
What’s your take on this? I’d love to hear what you have to say about this post. Leave a comment and share your views!
