Found My Kente Today

I just unpacked my Kenti (a huge aprox 12 yard long, antique 200+ year old robe that belonged to an African chief’s witch doctor) it was badly damaged in the flood of 2006, so I put it away until I had time to repair it. I used to wear it all the time, it’s one of the things that used to really freak people out and get them pointing the “she’s a witch” finger at me. Anyways, I’m going to spend the week repairing it.

I bought it at an antique store years ago, for only $275. They were selling it as a blanket!!! OMG! They had no idea what it was!!!! These things are super, super rare, and museums pay tens of thousands of dollars to get a hold of one. It’s worth a fortune, but I’ll never sell it.

I believe it came from Yoroba. Judging from the cloth, weaving, and colors, I think it was made in the late 1700′s to early 1800′s. Somewhere between 1780 – 1840 -ish. It’s so very “voodoo”, I love it.

What’s your take on this? I’d love to hear what you have to say about this post. Leave a comment and share your views!
