Need an idea on how to create a whole new world?

Writing a NaNoWriMo book, requires you to create a whole new world (more or less). Are you ready to do that?

Here is an article I wrote, that might help you out: http://www.squidoo.com/CreatingFantasyRealms/

I found myself needing a map as well, but didn’t find any online sites/software that met my needs.

My fantasy world is being bassed largely on the Inca and Olmec and Maya cultures, so what I did was to get some books out at the library which detailed the various aspects of their culture. I’m useing ideas I’m getting from my reading of these books, to create my world by.

Because I am bassing my fictional world on part of our real world, the landscape will be largely the same as the Amazon Rainforest. Well, that means that I need my maps to look like the Amazon Rainforest, so at first I started loooking at detailed maps of the Amazon, planning to draw my own, but than that got too tedious. I realized that I didn’t need a map of the whole world. In fact I didn’t even need a map of the entire country. As it turns out, 90% of my story well take place within the one city in my world, so really I only need to worry about mapping out the city itself.

So, my next step was to stop studying the layout of the Amazon and start studying the layout of the Aztec and Mayan cities. Again, the library books turned out the be a godsend, because not only did they have detailed maps, but also ariel photos of the cities, and street view photos, and photos taken from the tops of the pryamids. It was great, and useing all those details and photos and maps as my guide, I finaly, took a pen and scribbled out a map on a scrape of paper.

Here it is. Clicking on this thumbnail well open up the picture full size.

It’s just a rough scribble that I did, nothing is to scale, but it gives me a rough idea of what my city well look like and thus make it easier for me to move my characters around from one place to the next. I plan to draw up a better mor detailed map later, but for now this well do.

Maps for your novel?

Is anyone creating maps for their NaNoWriMo novels this year?

I haven’t drawn any maps yet, because I tend to map as I write and of course I can’t start writing for anouther 14 days yet. I’ll prob’ly do some maps at some point, cause I usually do, but my maps are generally more rough sketches on the corners of the paper I’m writing the story on. More doodles and scribbles than actual maps realy, not anything I’d put in the books, but rather things to help me visualize as I write.

I do love creating vitual maps though, useing the computer games: Age of Mythology and Emperor. Both games have a map making feature, that allows you to play the game on your map after you’ve created it, so it’s great for getting to “walk through” your world and see it in 3D. Has anyone else created maps useing video games?

I also use Soul Calibur III to create 3D versions of my characters.
