having a problem getting posts to show up… testing to see if tags are working yet

As you know I’m a regular reader of ProBlogger, it’s prob’ly the blog I read more than any other; it’s certainly the one I talk about most often here on Star Log. Well, today I was reading this post on ProBlogger, and of course it lead me to reading the links in it, includeing this one.

Oh my! I don’t think anyone would accuse me of being a link nazi!

I love surfing the blogs out there, and everytime I find one that I want to go back and read again I always forget where they are and can’t find them again…

I solved that problem though… the way I figure it, if I like the blog enough to go back and read it again, than people who like my blog, prob’ly well want to read it too, so I write a post about the blog, which contains a link to it, and than I add it to my blogroll… today my blog roll has over 100 links in it, it’s by far the biggest blog roll I’ve ever seen on a blog, but at least now I don’t lose my way back to blog I like to read.

well, an unexpected side effect of doing this is that a few days after adding my long blog roll I checked my Technorati rank, and was shocked to learn that I had gone from being in the millions up to being 200,000 that was quite switch…

well I come to find out, that several of the blogs I had added to my blogroll, had in turn added me to theirs, I was not expecting that, but that’s what did it… when I added them to mine, it raised their rank, and they did me the same favor…

WOW! You see at the time I started doing this, I didn’t know about pingbacks, I had never heard of them before, so I didn’t know that everytime I talked about a blog I liked, my blog sent them a copy of my article, so each time I sad something nice about them, they knew I had said it, only I didn’t know that was happening, so I didn’t know that the blogs I was talking about knew about my blog… well long story short, I found a great way to do link exchange and I wasn’t even trying!

So you want to know about SPAM? All right.

Did you know?

The word SPAM is not an acronym at all. It comes from a famous “Monty Python” sketch wherein a customer at a cafe is bombarded with SPAM, the only item on the menu. A chorus of Vikings revel with the song: “SPAM, SPAM, SPAM, SPAM, SPAM, lovely SPAM, wonderful SPAM.”

Additionally, SPAM is a Hormel product named after “spicy ham” that served as the basis of the sketch.

So what exactly is this thing called SPAM on places like email, blogs, and message boards?

What is SPAM?

That depends on what you are really asking.

SPAM is illeagle, not only is it illeagle, but it is a criminal act, an FBI reportable offense, that can result in a $25,000 fine, and for the worst offenders a prison sentance.

What is SPAM?

SPAM is the posting of links to illeagle web-sites, such as those promoting Porn or drugs; usually through emails, blog comments, or “guest posts” on message boards.

HOWEVER:

SPAM has come to mean many other things as well… and today is used very losely to discribe a wide variaty of interrnet activities.

Most of us today, know SPAM as the posting of multi-links to a single web site…SEE THIS POST HERE FOR AN EXAMPLE… this type of SPAM is usually done by Bloggers hoping to raise their blog ranks through pingbacks and inbound links… like the “true” SPAM it too, is an FBI reportable offence (admins getting this type of posting on their site can go to the FBI website, and file a report of “online harasment”)

the type of SPAM you are refereing to is known as “friendly” SPAM… this is when an admin of a blog or forum invites members to post comments that are totally pointless and usually only one or two words such as:

LOL!

Got Ya!

I Won!

so… does that answer your question?

Blogs for Writers

 

I’m planning on doing an update for my Z-List for writers. I’ll be posting the new edition in the next week or so. For now I am searching the net for blogs geared for writers, blogs by writers, blogs about the writing life, blogs that give writing lessons, and other such blogs that would be of interest to novelists everywhere. While most of the blogs I have added thus far are blogs that I read, I am looking for suggestions. What I mean is: If you are a writer and you have a blog for other writers, feel free to leave a comment on this post with a link to your blog so I can check it out. If it fits the type of blog I’m looking for, I’ll add it to the next edition of The Z-List for Writers. I look forward to reading your blogs.

For those of you who don’t know what The Z-List is, here is an explaination:

Like the chain letter, the Z-List contains addresses, but it differant in that it never asks you to buy anything. You don’t even have to buy a stamp. The Z-List is the chain mail for bloggers. It gets a blog pingbacks and inbound links, and helps to send more traffic to the blog, hopefully traffic that well stay on to become regular readers.

Anyone can start a Z-List. It’s easy. Just take a list of Blogs which you enjoy reading, and put them in a post on your own blog. Some say not to add your Blog to the list, while others say to go ahead and put your Blog right on the top of the list. Well, it’s your Blog and your list so you can put links to any Blog you please in it.

With the list you leave a message, asking that the next person to read this post, copies it and pastes it into the next post they make on their own Blog. They are free to add as many Blog links to the list as they like, and they are welcome to remove any links that are already in the list, if they feel that theose Blogs are inappropiate to be linked back to their own Blog.

Most Z-Lists start out with five or ten links, but after being passed on to just ten more bloggers, that Z-List can quickly have 100 or more links in it. The advantage of this is, that for each post, that each Blog in each link, well recieve a ping-back for that post. In other words, their Blog becomes linked to your Blog and your Blog to thiers, making it a win-win situation for both your Blog and their Blog, by raising the inbound link ranking with such places a Technorati and Google, meaning that you Blog moves higher in the ranks on search engins, resulting in more people finding your Blog and giving you more readers. Great huh? Absolutely!

I only accept family friendly blogs into my Z-Lists, so blogs that promote sex, porn, hate, racism, violence, hunting, guns, drugs, and other such acts are never added to any of my Z-Lists. If after addition to one of my Z-Lists, I later find that such posts and links have been added to the blog, the blogs link well be removed from all of my Z-Lists.

Please note, that spam posts are deleted automaticlynow, cause I got sick of scrolling through dozens of Porn and sex posts. Blogs that are about or link to sex or porn sites are automaticle scanned and deleted and I never even see them at all now, sobe sure your blog has no sex or porn on it or linked to it, before you post it, because it well never be reviewd if it does.

  

This is the Z-List for Writers as it originally appeared. As you can see, it was thrown together as I read the blogs, with no rhymn nor reason. The new edition, well be in alphabetical order.

UFO’s in USA

Ever read Ask Yahoo? I do. In fact, I’ve been a subcriber of it since day one, forget what year that was, but it was back around 1997 or so. This one kind of fits the overall theme of my blog here, so I thought it wold make for a good conversation starter.

Dear Ravi:

Maybe Americans are more in tune with the cosmos. Perhaps aliens want to chat about “American Idol” with real Americans. Whatever the reason, this is a hard question to crack because (attention, conspiracy theorists!) there isn’t an official site for reporting UFOs.The National UFO Reporting Center lists thousands of “close encounters” submitted by users. According to its database, the United States has far and away the most reported UFO sightings. In fact, California alone has reported more than China, England, India, and Brazil combined.But this doesn’t necessarily mean Americans see UFOs more than other people. It just means more Americans report seeing UFOs to this particular site. The Center for UFO Studies explains, “No one is sure why the number of UFO reports varies from country to country, but cultural, religious, and political factors are probably involved.” In other words, seeing a UFO in the United States might be kind of cool. In other countries, that may not be the case.The truth is, UFOs have been (allegedly) seen just about everywhere — from the hills of Switzerland to the coast of Australia. Should you ever spot one, the Center for UFO Studies advises you get witnesses, take pictures, and write down the details. Oh, and don’t forget to report it.

So, now that you have read it: What do you think? Do you think UFO’s are real or not? Why do you feel as you do? How can you support your beliefs?

The two-foot long bird called a Kea that lives in New Zealand likes to eat the strips of rubber around car windows!

Habitat & Nutrition

Keas range along the whole South Island of New Zealand, yet they are closely bound to the southern beech (Nothofagus) forests in the alpine ridge. In one study nest sites occur at a density of 1 per 4.4km². Nest sites are usually positioned on the ground underneath large beech trees, in rock crevices or dug burrows between roots. They are accessed by tunnels leading back 1m to 6m into a larger chamber, which is furnished with lichens, moss, ferns and rotting wood. The laying period starts in January and reaches into July (Jackson 1960). As omnivores, Kea are known to feed on more than 40 plant species (Tab. 1), on beetle larva, meat and foods provided by humans. Keas have also been taking advantage of human garbage and “gifts”. In captivity, these birds are very fond of butter, all forms of nuts, apples, carrots, grapes, mangos, figs, bread, dairy products, ground meat and even pasta. When roaming around, They might even chip paint the roofs of cars (if cars are near) and eat that.

The Z-List, EK Edition 1.0: Blogs for Writers

The Z-List: A great wonderful idea to help advertise blogs. Yes? Yes. I think anyone who has used the Z-List well agree with that. The principle behind the Z-List is the same as a chain letter. In a chain letter, you  mail a letter to five people. One that letter is the addresses of five more people. Each person who recieves a letter, adds five new addresses, and sends those to the five addresses on the letter that they had recieved. The piont of a chain mail is to send the same letter to an ever increasing network. Useualy the letter is an advertisement for something being sold. Basicly it’s a lot of free advertiseing for a company, based on “word of mouth”.

Like the chain letter, the Z-List contains addresses, but it differant in that it never asks you to buy anything. You don’t even have to buy a stamp. The Z-List is the chain mail for bloggers. It gets a blog pingbacks and inbound links, and helps to send more traffic to the blog, hopefully traffic that well stay on to become regular readers.

Anyone can start a Z-List. It’s easy. Just take a list of Blogs which you enjoy reading, and put them in a post on your own blog. Some say not to add your Blog to the list, while others say to go ahead and put your Blog right on the top of the list. Well, it’s your Blog and your list so you can put links to any Blog you please in it.

With the list you leave a message, asking that the next person to read this post, copies it and pastes it into the next post they make on their own Blog. They are free to add as many Blog links to the list as they like, and they are welcome to remove any links that are already in the list, if they feel that theose Blogs are inappropiate to be linked back to their own Blog.

Most Z-Lists start out with five or ten links, but after being passed on to just ten more bloggers, that Z-List can quickly have 100 or more links in it. The advantage of this is, that for each post, that each Blog in each link, well recieve a ping-back for that post. In other words, their Blog becomes linked to your Blog and your Blog to thiers, making it a win-win situation for both your Blog and their Blog, by raising the inbound link ranking with such places a Technorati and Google,  meaning that you Blog moves higher in the ranks on search engins, resulting in more people finding your Blog and giving  you  more readers. Great huh? Absolutely!

Well, I only just discovered the Z-List earlier this week. and searching for more Z-Lists had lead me to one conclusion: most of them are just randomly thrown together with no rhyme nor reason, and so comes my idea for Keyword Specific Z-Lists or links to blogs all on a single topic.

The first of these I shall call:

Paid to Blog???

I have a question… I keep hearing about how people are getting paid to write in their blogs… or how people are makeing money just writing blogs…well, I’d like to do that too, if it’s true that you can do that, I mean I’m writing something every day as it is, I might as well get paid to do it right?so, my question is, has anyone done this? are there any good places you could recommend that actually work… meaning they aren’t just scams, that have you write something and than never pay you… is this whole geting paid to blog a real thing that you really can get money to do, or is it just another scam? Anyone know?  

I’m new to the blogging world though… I’ve been online since 1997, and only just FINALLY started blogging! LOL! I’ve got 4 on Blogger, 3 on MySpace, one that I lost the link to and can’t remember the name of the host, and one one WordPress… so that’s 9 right now, but no dought there well be more…I try to keep each on on it’s own topicAs soon as I started though, everyone starts asking me “How much are you getting paid to blog?” and I’m like wth? They don’t blog, but they said they heard people get paid lots to do it, and well, that was news to me, so I figured, well, if I can get paid to do it, than why am I doing it for free right? so, now I’m researching the whole idea of getting paid to blogg… but as far as I can tell so far, it’s just alot of hype… I’ve found a ton of places that “pay to blog”, but than when you read the fine print, they only pay likr .002c per thousand people who read your post!!!!!! wow! that’s less than half a cent for every thousand uniquie page hits! highway robbery that’s what it is!than I found these otherplaces, that you have to pay like $25 a month, to join, and than they pay you to write articles for THIER blog, and than they only pay you if that post gets enough hits… YIKES! what a scam!

 I searched on Google and found a couple of sites that say they pay $4-$25 per post, if you sing your blog up with them, and write reviews for other web sites and products… but they also say that your blog has to be well established and get regular visitors before they well aprove it… I just signed up (cause they said it was free, so I figure what the heck), but my blog has only been around a short while, and I think it’s only had like a hundred visitors since it started,, so I don’t know if they well approve it or not… I’ll just wait and see what happens next.…but, my search continues, I’ve found a few folks who are getting paid to blog, not getting rich by any means, but they are getting an income comming in here and there, and that gives me hope, so, I am studying them and their blogs to find out how they are doing it and how I can do the same thing they are doing, only do it better . If I find out anything that really truly works I’ll post it here and let you guys all know so’s you can do it too.~~EK

I’ve done a bit of an update on this post so am putting it back on the front page as there are quite a few first time readers on the blog today as a result of the Australian Blog Awards (welcome if that’s you).

I’ve been reflecting this week about the amazing diversity of opportunities that are opening up for bloggers to earn an income from or through their blogging.

I’ve long advised that bloggers seeking to earn an income from blogging spread their interests across multiple revenue streams so as not to put all their eggs in one basket.

The wonderful thing is that this is becoming easier and easier to do 2005 has seen many options opening up. I thought I’d take a look at some of the ways that bloggers are currently making money through blogs.

Income Streams for Bloggers

Advertising Programs – Perhaps the most obvious changes in the past few months have been with the addition of a variety of viable advertising options for bloggers. The most common way bloggers seem to earn money online is via the contextual ad program from Google – Adsense. Another two popular ones with many is BlogAds. A more recent addition that many are using successfully are Chitika’s eMiniMalls and CrispAds, Text Link Ads.

Adgenta, Azoogle Ads, Intelli Txt, Peak Click, DoubleClickTribal Fusion, Adbrite, Clicksor, Industry Brains, AdHearUs, Kanoodle, AVN, Pheedo, Adknowledge, YesAdvertising, RevenuePilotTextAds, SearchFeed, Target Point, Bidvertiser, Fastclick Value Click and OneMonkey (to name just some of the options – I’m sure I’ve forgotten some) and there is a smorgasbord of options. Of course there is more to come with MSN Adcenter and YPN both in beta testing and with a variety of other advertising system currently in development (so I hear).

RSS Advertising – The past 12 months have seen some advances in RSS Advertising also. I’m yet to hear of any bloggers making big dollars through it to this point – but as improvements are made to the ad programs exploring this I’m sure we’ll start to see examples of it being profitable.

Sponsorship – In addition to the array of advertising programs that are available to join there is a growing awareness in the business of the value and opportunity that exists for them to advertise directly on blogs. I’m hearing more and more examples of this and have been fortunately to have a couple of ad campaigns of my own in the past month – one with Adobe a couple of weeks ago and another just completed with Ricoh for a new digicam over at my Digital Camera Blog. These are not isolated cases – as I say I know of many blogs exploring sponsorship with advertisers at present and suspect we’ll see more of it in the year ahead. Sponsorship is also happening on a post by post basis with some bloggers being paid to write on certain topics by companies – either in one off or a regular fashion.

Affiliate Programs – There are larger affiliate programs like Amazon, Linkshare, Clickbank and Commission Junction but also literally thousands of others from the large to the very small.

Digital Assets – Increasing numbers of bloggers have been developing other digital assets to support and add revenue streams to their blogs. By this I mean that I’m increasingly seeing e-books, courses and tele-seminars being run by bloggers. My recent foray into this with the first series of the six figure blogging course that Andy and I ran a few weeks ago and have just released the study version of. This type of activity will only increase in future – in fact this week I’ve seen numerous examples of bloggers running courses.

Blog Network Opportunities – with the rise in popularity of Blog Networks – bloggers are also being presented with more places to earn an income from their blogging – by writing for and with others. While it might be difficult to get a writing gig with one of the bigger networks – there are plenty who are always asking for new bloggers to join and who are willing to pay bloggers using a variety of payment models. While there are distinct advantages of blogging for yourself – blogging for an established network who will handle a lot of the set up/promotion/admin/SEO etc has it’s advantages also. More and more bloggers are combining writing for themselves on their own blogs with taking on blog network blogs as additional income streams.

Business Blog Writing Opportunities – as blogging has risen in it’s profile as a medium more and more businesses are starting blogs. Many of these companies have internal staff take on blogging duties – but an increasing number of them are hiring specialist bloggers to come on and run their blogs. I know of a number of bloggers who in the past month or two have been approached for such paid work. Check out Bloggers for Hire if you’re looking for this type of work.

Non Blogging Writing Opportunities – Also becoming more common are bloggers being hired to write in non blogging mediums. Manolo’s recent coup of a column in the Washington Post is just one example of this as bloggers are increasingly being approached to write for newspapers, magazines and other non blog websites. Along side this is the rise of bloggers as published book authors – this is to the extent that one blogger I spoke with this week complained to me that they were one of the few bloggers than they knew who didn’t have a book deal!

Donations – Tip Jars and donation buttons have been a part of blogging for years now but this last year saw a number of bloggers go full time after fundraising drives. Perhaps the most high profile of these was Jason Kottke of kottke.org who through the generosity of his readership was able to quit his job and become a full time blogger.

Flipping Blogs – Also more common in 2005 was the practice of ‘Blog Flipping’ – or selling of blogs. This has happened both on an individual blog level (I can think of about 20 blogs that sold this year) but also on a network level (the most obvious of these being the 8 figure sale of Weblogs Inc to AOL).

Merchandising – My recent attempt to sell ProBlogger.net T-shirts wasn’t a raging success, but it is an example of how an increasing number of bloggers are attempting to make a few extra dollars from their blogs by selling branded products through programs like Cafepress (although I have to say they’ve lost one of my own orders and are being quite unresponsive to my requests to follow it up at present). While I didn’t have a lot of success with merchandising – quite a few larger blogs are seeing significant sales – especially blogs with a cult following. I’m not at liberty to discuss details – but I know of one largish blog which will see sales over $20,000 in merchandise for the calendar year of 2005.

Consulting and Speaking – While it has been popular for established consultants to add blogs to their businesses we’re also starting to see bloggers with no consulting background earning money by charging readers for their time in consulting scenarios BECAUSE of the profile that their blogs have built them. Blogging has the ability to establish people as experts on niche topics and we all know the value of being perceived as an expert. I spoke to one blogger last month who charges himself out at over $200 an hour for speaking and consulting work – his area of expertise was something that he knew little about 18 months ago – but through his blog he’s become a leader in his field and a minor celebrity in his industry.

Well, I am already doing a few of his suggestions:

#1: I own 56 shops with Cafepress and one with Zazzle, and while I’m not getting rich from them, they do provide a semi-regular income.

#2: I have affiliate accounts with Amazon and Linkshare, unfortunatly, I’ve yet to see any income from these.

I promote them from my homepage though. Should I be promoting them from my blog too? Has anyone actually done this? or is blogging better used for just voiceing your thoughts on and forgetting about trying to make money with?

Personily I think the idea of making money on a blog just sounds like another scam, and I’ve never heard of anyone who actually did make money doing this. What do you guys think?
