Advice For Squid Angels on Squidoo

My answer to THIS QUESTION
about what to do in regards to dinging and reporting lenses.

The fact that you have no option to bless the lens is a bug that needs to be reported so it can be fixed. For that use the submit a bug form. You could also send a message to Kim and let her know about the blessing icon not showing up. It should always be there regardless of the lens content. And, yep, it has happened before. When Squidoo introduced the new template options, they “forgot” to add the blessing icons and non of the angels could bless any of the lenses that were using the new templates. That went on for about a week, before we could bless lenses again.

Answering your question:

It’s possible they are new and still have not figured out the ropes of Squidoo yet, so if the lens is not spam or TOS and it’s a really low rank, I would simply ignore it for now – in other words: do nothing.

I was an angel who rarely dinged and even less rarely reported. My feeling on the matter is that, crappy lenses get ignored and fall to the bottom of Squidoo. I spent my time worrying about blessing as many good lenses as possible. My first 2 months as an angel I had a 100 blessings per day goal – and set out to bless 100 lenses each and every day. Uhm, I didn’t actually bless 100 lenses every day, but I tried to anyways. LOL! My theory is that by promoting the best of Squidoo, the worst of Squidoo will fall by the wayside on it’s own.

What you have to ask yourself is this:

Is this lens spam? Is this lens a TOS violation? If you answer yes to either of those than report it.

If you answered no to both and you don’t think it’s a WIP lens, than ding it.

If you suspect it is a WIP lens than do nothing for now, wait a couple of weeks, check it again and see if the lensmaster has finished it yet, and than reevaluate what to do next, choosing than to report, ding, or once again do nothing.

I just retired from Angeling last week, but here is my personal guideline that I went by:

5 stars and a Blessing = a lens that deserves more than 5 stars

5 stars = a really outstanding lens

4 stars = a pretty good lens, but not quite outstanding

3 stars = a pretty good lens, but could use a little work

Favorite = any of the above on a favorite subject of mine and/or a lens I want to go back to again

I don’t use the 2 star and 1 star ratings

Do nothing = a lens that may or may not be still under construction and has little content, but does not seem to be spam

Ding = a crappy lens that is almost spam or could be translated as spam

Ding and Report = a TOS violation and/or outright spam

When it came to dinging, basically, I reserved that for the spam. You have no idea how much spam there is on Squidoo until you become an angel! OMG! There were days when one person would create a dozen new accounts and than create 10 lenses on each account – all EXACTLY THE SAME and usually promoting TOS violations (porn, prescription drugs, casinos, etc.) Those are the lenses that require the dings and reports. Why? Because that one person with 12 accounts, spends their second day on Squidoo, giving each of their lenses 11 five star rating, and by the end of the week, all 120 of their lens find their way into the Top 100 lists of each category! UGH! You can’t even begin to imagine how often that sort of thing happens – again and again and again, day after day, week after week. UGH! It’s only thanks to Squidoo’s busy team of angels, that these TOS violations stay off the Top 100 lists. That’s the hardest part of being an angel – trying to keep up with all the spam that comes in every day.

Plagiarism Update: Sent Report To WordPress

I have just sent a report on this evil thief’s activities to WordPress. I urge anyone with the sewing related WordPress blog to look at the thief’s blog and see if your posts are being stolen. If they are, please send a report to WordPress as well. If there is a way to identify this plager and send them to jail, let me know, because I will pursue that course of action. As an author I take plagiarism very seriously, and so should you. Well, at least they chose the right name for their blog: Scum Bag Clothing. I can’t think of anything that makes a person more of a scumbag than being a thief.

Here is a copy of the letter I sent to WordPress:

Posts off of more than 30 different WordPress blogs (all sewing topics) are being copied and posted word for word, picture for picture, on someone else’s blog!

I use CopyScape on my posts, and CopyScape notified me that my posts were being copied and distributed on someone else’s blog without my permission, so I went to their blog to check and CopyScape was right. They copied everything, word for word, picture for picture… even the CopyScape plagiarizing warning gif!

Because they are copying posts off of my sewing blog, so I started checking all the other posts on their blog, and they’ve plagiarized every single post on their blog, by stealing posts and pictures off of other people’s blogs! I’ve only checked the posts for Jun so far, but so far I’ve counted over 30 different WordPress blogs from which they are stealing posts and hotlinking images from!

I don’t know how to stop them. I’ve been trying to find a way to notify their blog host, but so far have not had any luck. If you know of a way to stop them from stealing the posts off of our blogs, please let me know, cause I don’t like them claiming that they wrote the articles I wrote. They are even displaying my drawings on their blog and claiming they drew them!

Sorry for the rant, but I thought you’d want to know that they’ve been stealing posts and passing them off as theirs.

This is so frustrating. I put so much work into writing my articles and drawing my artwork, and I know other folks do as well. It’d be one thing if they were linking back to our blogs with a review or something, but they are claiming that they wrote all of these posts and drew all of the art and took all of the photos themselves!

Is there a law enforcement agency I can contact about this? I was told that the FBI had an identity theft division that handles online predators that steal other peoples identities. Should I contact the FBI about this? I mean who ever is running this blog is claiming to be me, by saying they wrote those articles, so that’s identity theft as far as I can tell.

What should I do?

Is there anything that you can do about it, since they are stealing posts off of WordPress blogs?

It all started in a comadey skit when a woman went into a resturant and ordered ham and eggs and was told that the only thing on the menue was spam, bacan, eggs, and spam (all mixed together), and try as she might to get anything to eat but spam, the only thing the waitress would bring her was an unending supply of spam, spam, spam and even more spam.

I haven’t seen that skit in nearlty20 years, but tonight while searching YouTube I found it, and here it is, for those of you who didn’t know why we call unwanted emails spam:

Spam

Once upon a time Spam was spiced ham in a can. Than along came the internet and spam now means loaads of unwanted emails, but do you know how a can of ham became an unwanted email?

It all started in a comadey skit when a woman went into a resturant and ordered ham and eggs and was told that the only thing on the menue was spam, bacan, eggs, and spam (all mixed together), and try as she might to get anything to eat but spam, the only thing the waitress would bring her was an unending supply of spam, spam, spam and even more spam.

I haven’t seen that skit in nearlty20 years, but tonight while searching YouTube I found it, and here it is, for those of you who didn’t know why we call unwanted emails spam:

So you want to know about SPAM? All right.

Did you know?

The word SPAM is not an acronym at all. It comes from a famous “Monty Python” sketch wherein a customer at a cafe is bombarded with SPAM, the only item on the menu. A chorus of Vikings revel with the song: “SPAM, SPAM, SPAM, SPAM, SPAM, lovely SPAM, wonderful SPAM.”

Additionally, SPAM is a Hormel product named after “spicy ham” that served as the basis of the sketch.

So what exactly is this thing called SPAM on places like email, blogs, and message boards?

What is SPAM?

That depends on what you are really asking.

SPAM is illeagle, not only is it illeagle, but it is a criminal act, an FBI reportable offense, that can result in a $25,000 fine, and for the worst offenders a prison sentance.

What is SPAM?

SPAM is the posting of links to illeagle web-sites, such as those promoting Porn or drugs; usually through emails, blog comments, or “guest posts” on message boards.

HOWEVER:

SPAM has come to mean many other things as well… and today is used very losely to discribe a wide variaty of interrnet activities.

Most of us today, know SPAM as the posting of multi-links to a single web site…SEE THIS POST HERE FOR AN EXAMPLE… this type of SPAM is usually done by Bloggers hoping to raise their blog ranks through pingbacks and inbound links… like the “true” SPAM it too, is an FBI reportable offence (admins getting this type of posting on their site can go to the FBI website, and file a report of “online harasment”)

the type of SPAM you are refereing to is known as “friendly” SPAM… this is when an admin of a blog or forum invites members to post comments that are totally pointless and usually only one or two words such as:

Got Ya!

I Won!

Blogs for Writers

 

I’m planning on doing an update for my Z-List for writers. I’ll be posting the new edition in the next week or so. For now I am searching the net for blogs geared for writers, blogs by writers, blogs about the writing life, blogs that give writing lessons, and other such blogs that would be of interest to novelists everywhere. While most of the blogs I have added thus far are blogs that I read, I am looking for suggestions. What I mean is: If you are a writer and you have a blog for other writers, feel free to leave a comment on this post with a link to your blog so I can check it out. If it fits the type of blog I’m looking for, I’ll add it to the next edition of The Z-List for Writers. I look forward to reading your blogs.

For those of you who don’t know what The Z-List is, here is an explaination:

Like the chain letter, the Z-List contains addresses, but it differant in that it never asks you to buy anything. You don’t even have to buy a stamp. The Z-List is the chain mail for bloggers. It gets a blog pingbacks and inbound links, and helps to send more traffic to the blog, hopefully traffic that well stay on to become regular readers.

Anyone can start a Z-List. It’s easy. Just take a list of Blogs which you enjoy reading, and put them in a post on your own blog. Some say not to add your Blog to the list, while others say to go ahead and put your Blog right on the top of the list. Well, it’s your Blog and your list so you can put links to any Blog you please in it.

With the list you leave a message, asking that the next person to read this post, copies it and pastes it into the next post they make on their own Blog. They are free to add as many Blog links to the list as they like, and they are welcome to remove any links that are already in the list, if they feel that theose Blogs are inappropiate to be linked back to their own Blog.

Most Z-Lists start out with five or ten links, but after being passed on to just ten more bloggers, that Z-List can quickly have 100 or more links in it. The advantage of this is, that for each post, that each Blog in each link, well recieve a ping-back for that post. In other words, their Blog becomes linked to your Blog and your Blog to thiers, making it a win-win situation for both your Blog and their Blog, by raising the inbound link ranking with such places a Technorati and Google, meaning that you Blog moves higher in the ranks on search engins, resulting in more people finding your Blog and giving you more readers. Great huh? Absolutely!

I only accept family friendly blogs into my Z-Lists, so blogs that promote sex, porn, hate, racism, violence, hunting, guns, drugs, and other such acts are never added to any of my Z-Lists. If after addition to one of my Z-Lists, I later find that such posts and links have been added to the blog, the blogs link well be removed from all of my Z-Lists.

Please note, that spam posts are deleted automaticlynow, cause I got sick of scrolling through dozens of Porn and sex posts. Blogs that are about or link to sex or porn sites are automaticle scanned and deleted and I never even see them at all now, sobe sure your blog has no sex or porn on it or linked to it, before you post it, because it well never be reviewd if it does.

Reporting harassment and spam to your forum

Today, I had yet another attack of keyword link spamming on one of my forums…the poster, has never joined and used a differant user name each time they left the posts filled with link spam. For days now I have been patiant with this troll and have asked them to stop posting links to their web site all over my board, however they only left “laughing smilies” and posted more links per post. I warned them that what they were doing was not only against my boards rules, but that it was againt ProBoards rules, and US government policy as well and warned them that if they conntinued I would have no choise but to do what I always do to keyword link spam trolls and report them to the FBI.

the posters responce was a touge smillie and yet another link spam….so as I warned them, their IP # is now publicly posted on my board, and I have just returned from the FBI’s reporting site.

It got my thinking though…I’ve used this method to get rid of trolls on all of my sites, and I’ve been asked before how do I send these reports to the FBI

well it’s simple realy, just go to their website, all the info is there. remember to point how that they are harassing you, disrupting conversations on your site, and causeing you to be annoyed because you have to spend each daay deleting their posts instead of working on your forums

Also be sure to contact the web host that they used to build/host the site that they are spamming on your board…most cases the host will ban them and delete their site

and always keep track of the IP# and be sure you tell every org. you send the report to, both their IP# and the web site that the links open up to
