So my novel is based around the regeneration of a mad scientist’s brain tissue and the transfer of that brain to a new body. I know, a lot tohandle, but my mad scientist died in 1894 in a small village in Romania. He’s waking up in the future… not too distant future, say another 50 years? He’s waking up in a London Research Hospital with, as you can imagne, all sorts of new technology and resources on his hands.

I don’t exactly have a plot, but I don’t want to just throw that out to all of you to chew on, because you have your own plots to figure out!

So I’m just going to inquire: What sort of things will my MS be doing or getting into? Something I can work an idea off of.

Thank you in advance!
———-

WOW! I would definatly read this!

He would have died in a time when books by Jules Vern, Mary Shelly, Edgar Alan Poe, and H.G.Wells were being written, so he’d be thinking of stuff like “The Island of Dr Morue”, “Food of the Gods”, “Frankenstein” and “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea”.

But than he’d be waking up in a time when scientists in Texas and Japan are cloning sheep and cats, as of 2007 many endangered animals in zoos are now clones, as of 2008 in Japan $150k will get you a clone of your cat or dog, in 2006 scientists in France took a brain dead man and made the first cyborg, in 2009 scientist crossed jelly fish with rabbits to create green glow in the dark bunnies for boutique pet stores in France, astronauts go to the moon about every 6 months now, a probe is on it’s way to Jupiter, and last month Planet Gleise 581 was declared the first planet discovered that is suspected of having human-like life living on it – a probe has been sent to contact life on G581 and will arrive there in 2029.

That is where we are in right now today. 50 years ago, cloning and cyborgs were a myth of science fiction, today they are real. 50 years ago airplane travel was relatively new and space travel and life on other planets was laughed at as impossible. 50 years ago color TV was the ravings of a lunatic, today we not only have color tv, but computers, iPods, and more. If we have come that far in 50 years, think where we will be 50 years from now?

Now take your scientist – a man from a time when clones, moving pictures, and space travel were the ravings of madmen, and here he is waking up in a future where they are part of every day life? The first thing that came to my mind was all those “Giant Monster” movies from the 1950′s, like “Them!” with the giant ants, or “Attack of the Killer Shrews” with the giant rats, etc.

Your scientist is going to be thinking about the stuff he grew up with and seeing the stuff we have now and 50 years from now, and he’s going to use that to create havoc. He’s going to be like iRobot or Matrix or Jurassic Park or I Am Legend or Resident Evil, he’s going to create something so big, so advanced, and so devious that it’s going to take all the governments in the world to join forces in peace together, just to stop him. I can so see your Mad Scientist going all Umbrella Corp on us.

:) Boy, now you got me wanting to write something like this!

RE: NaNoWriMo Naming Aliens

This is the description:
The aliens were human shaped but had rough skin like reptiles. Their eyes were yellow and their irises were thin like deep black slits. The way they moved gave me the impression like they were made of sand. Their voices were gravelly and sounded like sand being crunched underfoot as one walks along a beach.

Do you know any thing about real alien abduction cases?

What you have described is the Reptoids/Reptilians of Draco (real aliens, from a real planet, from real abduction cases, not from fiction stuff). If you are basing your on real abduction cases, than going with a real race is best to work with as ufologists will be quick to tear your story apart if you try to pass it off as based on real aliens, but than use a “new” race created just for your story. You could also run into some legal issues if abducttees suspect you are writing to make fun of their experiences. (political incorrectness/minority laws apply here and could result in huge lawsuits, so be very careful when dealing with an alien story if you try to write about real type aliens. Just so you know.) To write a fictional account of real abduction cases, is tricky business, and should only be attempted if you’ve done years of research into them and talked with the actual abductees themselves.

(Oh and I’m a ufologist by the way, I specialize in abduction cases, not UFO sightings. My books are often based on real abduction cases. I know from personal experience, the problems of dealing with legal issues when writing alien fiction. If you are not extremely well versed on real alien cases, it’s best to avoid writing anything that could be misconstrued as you pointing a finger at the real cases.) (alien abduction is what I’m writing the year for NaNoWriMo btw.)

or Are your aliens the strictly fantasy world science fiction fictional-type aliens?

If so, than, you can go and call them whatever you want. But again what you have described is the Reptiods/Reptilians of Draco (real aliens, from a real planet, from real abduction cases, not from fiction stuff) and if you are going the fantasy road, I would advice you AVOID references to real Retoids, Reptilians, or the Draco Star System, as, like I said above, you could run into some seriously nasty legal issues if you come off sounding as though you are making light of real alien abduction cases.

As for what to call them? Well, if it was me, I would look up the Latin names for lizards or snakes, which resembled the aliens I was designing, and than I would create a planet name based on that. Than I would Use the planet name as the basis for naming the race themselves.

For example, when reading your description, my first thought was that your aliens had green alligator like skin, but than reading the part about the beach, changed my mental image, and now I’m thinking of them as being like Humanoid Sidewinders with skin that looks like this: http://www.dorlingkindersley-uk.co.uk/nf/ClipArt/Image/0,,239012_1583769_,00.html

Now with that image in mind I head to Wikipedia and find: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crotalus_cerastes

I now know that the correct name for a Sidewinder is actually: Crotalus cerastes.

I would now take that and name my planet: Crotalus

From there I would come up with a name for them, such as:

The Crotalites
The Crotatines
The Crotites

or some other such name.

The end result is that I now have a very “alien” sounding name, that still sounds logical when spoken in the English language.

Anyways, hope that helps you find a name for them. Good luck with your story!

Space Ship vs Star Ship

(reposting this old post)

What is the difference between a space ship and a star ship?

I don’t know if this is considered “cannon” to the general sci-fi genre or not; or how it compares to other writers and what they do, but I write sci-fi and this is what I do for my own stories:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
shuttle crafts:
can only be used for short distance travel, much like an airplane, they carry at most maybe 30 people; they can leave the atmosphere to reach an orbiting ship; they can leave an orbiting ship to land on a planet; they can travel like a plane from one continent to another on a planet;
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

spaceships:

large ships, can have a large crew of hundreds, but if need be could be run with only a handful of crew members; they may or may not have shuttle crafts on board; their travel abilities varies depending on the type of ship; small ones act much like large compacaty shuttle crafts, while the large ones can orbit planets, and travel from one planet to the next; some can only go to the nearest planets, while others can go to the farthest planets in to solar system; they do not however leave the solar system

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
starships:
these are the same as spaceships in size and structure, but they are driven useing different “fuel” methods than the spaceships, thus enabling them to travel to other solar systems… i.e. they can travel from one star to the next, thus the reason they are called “star” ships. Depending on the “fuel-method”, some star ships can only travel to near solar systems while other can go not only to other solar systems but also to other galaxies; some can travel via a “portal drive”, to arrive at far reaching galaxies in a matter of seconds
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

inter-stela starships:

these are the biggest, most powerful of the ships in my books, they can carry tens of thousands on board these giant mega ships; these are the same as starships, just bigger in size; in my stories, these are rare and hard to build ships, of the 12 built only 2 survived the test runs and remain in use, but are considered dangerous and rarely used; in my books they were built by the race of a dieing planet, in order to move the entire population to a new planet

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have not personally used the term star cruiser in my stories or books. However, if I did use it, this is how it would be used by me:
star cruiser:
star cruisers would come in many types and forms, but most often, a small ship used during war times; manned by a pilot and a crew of maybe 3 or 4 others; this small ship can’t go very far, but it can go very fast, it is small and can move in and out of tight places;
if a transport type it would be used to get spies to where they need to go without being caught;
if a fighter type, it would be able to fire on delicate areas of large ships with pinpoint accuracy;
very very small single passenger ones would be able to be used on land, like a cross between a motorcycle and a hovercraft; these would be called land cruisers not star cruisers
big star cruisers would be passenger transports from planet to planet, and refered to as transport barges
a cruise-ship or cruise-liner, would be the same as a cruise-ship or cruise-liner on earth, only it would be a star-ship not a water boat; in that it carries tourists on pleasure cruises from one planet/galaxy to another; these would be big slow moving luxury liners
at least, that’s what comes to my mind when I think of star cruiser
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Well, that’s me and my stories, and how I define space-ships veres star-ships

I hope this helps

Have you ever watched Star Trek and heard Kirk tell Sulu to raise the deflector shields? I was reading a sci-fi writers forum today, and found a debate on wither or not a writer should use shields on their ships, and if so what are those shields like, how to they work, etc.? Of course I had to join in the debate. You know me. Well anyways, what follows here, is the answer I had to the debate:

In my stories the ships (most notably the VISION~D8) are built out of a “space age material” as us humans would call it. It is a silver colored metal-like substance. The ships are very smooth, with such a high polish that they have a slippery, almost wet feel to them.

The material is very strong, and very sturdy, and withstands the tiny particals that would rip other hulls apart.

Additionally, there is the shape of the ship, which is somewhat “football” shaped; the shape itself deflects things away from it; should anything actually hit the ship, the material is so slippery, that the object has no impact

the silver colored martial is so smooth, that is reflects it surroundings, rendering the ship itself “invisible”, camouflaging with its surroundings, making it able to slip past enemies unseen

I have never written any shields into the stories, it never occurred to me that the ships may even need them.

What’s your take on this? I’d love to hear what you have to say about this post. Leave a comment and share your views!

If you have enough lenses to make it into the top 10 lens-master list, you’ll get huge ammounts of traffic to your lenses… I’ve been on their top 10 since they started; it was originally just for members who had won the Giant Squid award, but now they let anybody join. every time you make a new lens you have to post a comment to tell how many lenses you have and they update you name on the list

Here are the links to the lenses I made about my fave author:

http://www.squidoo.com/KeithLaumer and my fave book series:

http://www.squidoo.com/JamesRetief (which he wrote). The pictures of the book covers at the top of the lens are scans of the actual books I own. The series was written in the 60′s and 70′s, most of the ones I have are the 80′s reprints. The first editions are hard to find.

here is my new Doctor Who lens, just made it: http://www.squidoo.com/DoctorWhoGifts
