tagging Star Log – Test Post – Please Ignore – Thank you!

When starting a new blog, I like to set up all the “possible” tags I may use over the years to come, and so I have them in the clickable drop down menu of my dashboard, I put them all on the first few posts of the blog – This is a very old post, copied from Star Log, to put my tags on this blog. The only thing this post contains is a list of every tag I have every used on Star Log. As each tag list can only contain 200 characters, there well be several of these posts, until all tags have been inserted into this blogs drop down feature. So, you can just ignore this post as it is only useful to me the blogger and not you the reader.

We know we can do more than 50k. Why? Either we’ve done it before or we’re just plain cocky.
Yep. I’m talking about people like you and me.
So what’s your 50+ goal?
Personally, I’d like to see myself hit 80. My first year, I got 70k. The second year, I was desperate to pass THAT, but life got in the way and I couldn’t write as much as I wanted to, so I only made a mere 60k. This year, I would like to go back to my goal of passing my first novel. So, 80k here I come!
You?
————–

I’m here, my goal is 200k, that’s 6,667 words per day.

I would really like to try for a million, but the most I’ve ever typed in a single day was 12k words, and that wasn’t easy to do, so I think it would be really hard for me to reach 400k. Maybe in a couple of years I’ll be typing faster, but right now, I just don’t think I’ve got the speed to do more than 250k at the most, so my goal is 200k. But evey year I get a higher word count so who knows, a million may be in my furture 3 or 4 years from now.

In 2008 I hit 50k in 3 days, so I know I can get high word counts fast if I really push myself, but to write that many word EVERY day for 30 days, I’m not sure I can do that. I mean there’s a big difference between pounding out 50k in 3 days and pounding out another 50k for the next every 3 days for the next 30 days! It’s one thing to spend 3 days writing none stop for 10 or 12 or more hours, it’s another to spend 30 days doing it!

Once (not for NaNo) I wrote steady without sleep for 52 hours. NEVER AGAIN! The writing sucked big time and lack of sleep made me write slower than normal so I didn’t get very far at all. I’d rather have something I can salvage to publish when I get done, than a load of sleep induced crap (which is what I write when I go too long without sleep! LOL!)

But boy do I applaude the folks who can do the mega super high word counts! You guys give me a goal to work towards, every year I get about 20k more than the year before, so eventually I’ll get there, and hopefully someday, I’ll be able to up my NaNo goal to a million words – I would really really really love to do that!

For now I’m aiming at 200k, and we’ll see if I go past that or not. If I can get past it, I’ll just keep going until Nov 30 and see how high I can go.

I average about 2k an hour and usualy have 2 or 3, 7k days each week, so in the last 5 years my lowest was 75k and I usually get 150k. My highest ever, was when I reached 238k in 2008, so I’m pretty sure I can do it again. My highest single day word count was 12,500 (but that was very, very, very hard to do and I’ve only every written over 10k words per day less than 5 days in my entire life).

This year, I’ve lost my job, I’m out of school, I’m still single, so I really have nothing to do all day long, I only sleep 4 hours a day anyways, and there is absolutely nothing on my schedule the entire month of November (is that very lucky or very sad?) …I could actually spend 20 hours a day writing this year…

hmmmm…I get about 2k per hour at 20 hours times 30 days that means I could (in theory at least) set my goal at 1,200,000 words…but that’s like what 40k words a day…in theory I could do it, in reality, I don’t think so! LOL! I wish I could write steady none stop for 20 hours a day – I love writing – but my hands would get tired if I tried doing that.

But I figure, the way my schedual is right now, I should be able to average 7k a day, which puts me writing 1k – 2k per hour for 6 – 9 hours a day. And I also figure, I may not always have enough time off to write high word counts in the furture, so I should do it now, this year, while I do have enough time off to write that much, because I may not get the chance to do it again, so why put off til next year what I have time to do this year.

Besides…crazy is good, esp when you got a plot about a crazy psychopath going on a killing spree. I can keep the plot going for 200k words, because if all else fails I can just throw in a few more victims for him to slice and dice to rack up pointless word counts! LOL!

And for the first time in 7 years I actually have a plot that can use the Traveling Shovel of Death! YAY!

Than again, I’m still out of work, I’m still single, so I really have nothing to do all day long, I only sleep 4 hours a day anyways…I could actually spend 20 hours a day writing this year…hmmmm…I get about 2k per hour at 20 hours times 30 days that means I could (in theory at least) set my goal at 1,200,000 words…thing is, I had CTS when I was a teenager, and overtyping already caused me to have surgey on my right hand several years ago, so I know I can’t physically sit down and type that many hours, that many days in a row, (because I don’t want my CTS to come back or to end up in surgey again)…I wish I could write 20 hours a day – I love writing! …10 hours a day, maybe, but right now I don’t think I could do 20…still that’d be 600k… well, we’ll just say my goal is 200k and see how far past it I get. =P

I’ve done it before, so I think I can do it again, because I think I’ll have time to be an over achiever this year. I wasn’t sure last month what my November schedule would be like so I had not decided yet if I was going to try for more than 50k or not. But I’ve been able to successfully reschedule almost everything this year, freeing up lots of extra time (YAY!) So, today I decided, it looks like I’ll have time to aim at 200k this year.

If I did the math right, I have to write 6,667 words per day to reach my goal of 200k for NaNoWriMo this year! Luckily I have a plot this year, that I really, really love, so I should have enough motivation to write that many words a day, and I think I can get 200k words into my story (if not I have a second plot ready to write after-wards, just in case.)

So is anyone else going to try for 200k?

>It’s that time of year again – NaNoWriMo 2010!

> black birdfall leaves centerblack bird

I wrote my first book in 1978 and haven’t stopped writing since.

NaNoWriMo 2010 will be my 6th year at NaNo. So far I’ve had 5 years and 4 wins and this year I’m going for my fifth win (or 5 wins going on 6th if you count Script Frenzy too) .

I signed up the last week of Nov 2004, but never actually got started writing anything. Though it was the year I actually signed up, I don’t count it as my first year, since I never actually started writing anything!

I failed my “official” first year (2005) …did like 2,000 before I got bored with my plot. I was confused with the whole “contest atmosphere” too, and had not really gotting into the spirit of the whole write 50k as fast as possible thing, because I was too busy trying to write at my best instead of a my fastest, so I just fizzled out big time.

In the 2006 relaunch of the site, the 2004 archive got deleted, along with the accounts of many members who had joined in 2004. My account was one of the thousands that vanished in October of 2006. :( Luckily, because the system was wiped clean it had no memory of the deleted usernames either, thus allowing us to start new accounts with the exact same usernames. YAY! So, now my account says I signed up in 2006 instead of 2004, like it is supposed to say (many of us whose accounts now say 2006 as our join date, actually joined in 2004, btw.) However, by that time I had spent most of 2006 posting on the forums and had figured out that the contest was all about writing lots of words and hope they come out as a novel, rather than write a smooth polished publishable novel in 30 days, and so by the time November 2006 rolled around I was ready to toss my inner editor aside and try it again.

The result? I did 183,000 my second year/first win (2006) … kind of to make up for failing the first year, but than never went back to edit it. =P (and I did it long hand too!)

In 2007 I joined Script Frenzy, than life got in the way and I never wrote a word.

I reached 75,000 third year (2007), but I never finished the story, because my computer ate large sections of it the following December! ***screams*** ***pulls out hair*** Lesson learned, I now know to make copies of my draft and save it on a blog I created specifically for saving my drafts on.

In June 2008 I returned to Script Frenzy ready to write what I never got to write the year before, only to learn the contest had been moved to April and was already over! ARRGH!

In 2008, I did the unthinkable and changed my goal from 50k to 200k. YOW! But I did it and finished out the month with my biggest total ever: 238,153 words in 30 days!!!! (spaced out over 5 different books btw – none of which I totally finished, but one of which has since been nearly finished and at the time of this writing had just finished going through it’s 4th draft! YAY!)

NaNoWriMo 2009 rolled around and I did not start because I had a stroke October 19th and than got N1H1 a week later. I was determined not to let anything stop me from joining the contest though, so on day 14 of the contest I was back and attempting to write double time, in spite of the fact that my stroke had affected my ability to use my hands and legs. I dragged on very, very slowly, however, in spit of my efforts, but than suddenly in the last 5 days I just sat down and wrote steady none stop day and night and shocked myself when I made it to 114,000!

In 2010, I did the unthinkable yet again and took over as the ML for Script Frenzy in both Saco and Portland and went crazy shuffling write-ins between the 2 regions, but still ended up writing 12 plays each between 10 – 30 “theater minutes” long, meaning I wrote enough for THREE Script Frenzy contests instead of one! YAY!

Now NaNoWriMo 2010 is bearing down upon us and I’ve decided to try to beat my highest total and try for 250K or more. YIKES! It’s a dream, but not my “actual” goal. It was REALLY HARD to reach 200k before, and it had me writing night and day to do it. Don’t know if I’ll have the time I had that year, and this year I want to focus on writing slower to write a publishable novel. So this year my goal is 75k, and if I go over – great.

Script Frenzy Write Ins for Saco & Greater Portland Regions

black birdfall leaves centerblack bird

I just wanted to let you guys know if you are planning on doing Script Frenzy this year, there will be Write-Ins for the Saco and Greater Portland areas this year. I’ve taken over the long vacant spot of ML for the region, and wanted to make sure you knew there will be meeting this year. I know there was a lots of requests for it on this forum last year.

You can find out more info about it at the Script Frenzy regional forums for the Southern Maine are:

http://www.scriptfrenzy.org/eng/node/3579939

I know I’ve been hearing a lot of local folks on FaceBook talking about Script Frenzy, not sure how many have actually signed up yet, but we seem to be a wide spread group, so I’m not sure how we are going to work the Write-Ins out yet.

There are a few time/days that are out for me: Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays after noon time I’m not available.

I’m available all day Monday, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and on mornings before noon Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. So that actually leaves us with a pretty flexible schedule to work with.

So I guess my question is: What days and times are good for you? I’ll see if we can work out a Write-In Schedule around it.

I’m open to the idea of multiple meeting places, say one day in Saco and one day in downtown Portland, each week? That way we could have meetings close to folks in both Saco Bay Area and the Greater Portland Area?

The thing is, it’s a bit of a drive for me to get into Portland, (I’m about an hour away) so the Portland meetings could not be in the mornings, they’d have to be in the afternoons.

I’m sure you guys are all aware of the new library being built in Portland (or is that rebuilt?) and the Grand Opening is in April, so I was thinking that would be a great place to hold the Downtown Portland meetings. What do you think?

And I know most folks in the Saco area a pretty familiar with The Golden Rooster, and seeing how it has been the official meeting place for NaNoWriMo for several years now, why not just keep the same place we use for NaNo and use it for Screnzy?

So, here’s what I was thinking:

The Portland Library:
Wednesday afternoons from 1 to 4
Congress Street, Portland

The Golden Rooster
Friday mornings 10 to 12
Main St, Saco

What do you think? Will that work for every body?

Other possible options could include Pizza by Micheal in Saco, the Dyer Library in Saco, the Libby Library in Old Orchard, or the McAurthor Library in Biddeford.

I’ll be setting up the calendar here in a few days (as soon as I figure out how to set up a Gmail account so I can! =P).

If anyone has any ideas or suggestion, feel free to pass them on! @ http://www.scriptfrenzy.org/eng/node/3579939

I look forward to seeing you guys at the meetings!

>

Script Frenzy seeks writers’ advice: I want to know what questions you would like answered.

Script Frenzy

Script Frenzy Scriptwriters! Every year I try to find professionals to help answer how-to questions during the month of April (they are called Cameos on the website) and I want to know what questions you would like answered. Post your questions in the comments below!

My question would be thusly – I always hear in commentaries of movies about how the script is continually changing. Does that ever annoy the script writer, knowing his original work was changed?

How do you write action sequences? You’re not supposed to have much direction in the script, but just saying “they fight” is not very descriptive (and doesn’t take up much page space!).

I wouldn’t mind some more in depth info on camera directions and so on. I never really bother, but I’ve been told that then it’s not a ‘real’ script and I’m just curious about it all. :D

How much do script writers get paid, & how long does it usually take them to write a script? How do people turn a book into a script for a movie?

I always see questions and answers geared towards movie scripts, which I don’t write. Sure the info is helpful, but it’s focusing on getting your script filmed!

I write stage plays for live theater, not big Broadway theater, but small, local grade school/high school/college theater. You know, for the young actors who are just getting started in their acting career. My scripts tend to be short for half hour to hour long school/college plays with less than 7 characters.

Screnzy for me is not one 100 page script but ten 10 page scripts. Short, quick, with minimal setting and costume, and with only a few actors.

So, I’d like to see more advise being written for those of us who focus on writing stuff for a younger age group, as well as for those of us writing for the little indie stage groups.

As for questions, I could really use some advice on how to get my play scripts actually staged. I love writing them and really have no problems in the actual writing aspect, but the whole promotion, marketing, and getting my scripts to the right people – I could really use some advice in those areas.

My biggest area in need of help/advice, is I want to go the published rout. Publish the play than let schools and indie stage groups buy it, but than, How do I get paid for the actual performances? I’m so confused in that area. Is the book price the only pay I should be getting or should I get a % of the ticket price and if so, how do I go about charging it? I could really use some advice in the whole area of getting paid for productions of my plays.

Sorry for the long post, but yeah, any advice in these areas would be really helpful. Can’t wait for April to get here. :)

Screnzy RE: How much stage direction is reasonable?

black birdfall leaves centerblack bird

How much stage direction is reasonable?

Hey guys!
How much stage direction do you think is reasonable? I’m just trying to figure out what would be too much…
Thanks!

I’d say it depends on the play write’s personal style as well as the style of the play in question. I think of stage direction in a play, like the choreography in a ballet. If every player knows where to be when and what to do at what moment, than you don’t have characters falling over each other and messing up the play.

For example a one person play may not need any directions at all, simply relying fully on the actor’s personal movements as he speaks. With only one or two actors on stage, the play would be more open to actor interpretation. Two actors could guess each others movements and act accordingly.

Whereas a full two hour production with intricate (setting, lighting, costume, etc) details, and 20 or 30 actors on stage at the same time, would need quite a bit of stage direction to prevent it from turning into utter chaos. I mean, if you have 20 actors on stage, each one “doing his own thing” when it comes to interpretation, you’d have nothing but a huge uncoordinated mess.

So, when I’m writing a play, my personal style is: the bigger the production, the more detailed the stage directions need to be, while the smaller production can go with little or even no stage directions.

>How Do You Write Your NaNo Novel?

>
black birdfall leaves centerblack bird

What do you do? Do you plan ahead? Do you just jump in on day one with no plot in mind?

I plan out like crazy, for week after week, with detailed outlines and graphs, and maps and illustrations. I go the whole nine yards when it comes to planning. I do this every single year.

Than November comes and I start writing. Before I know it my main character is dead and laying in a pool of blood, while some minor villain is now the main character, and every plot detail I had planned has been thrown out the window, while my story runs in a completely different direction than I had planned it!

Once I get started, I stop for nothing, either. Neither spelling, nor grammar, nor dark of night can force me to go back and edit any of my random drivel!

In the end, I have a complete total mess that doesn’t in anyway resemble my original plan, but at least I hit 50k.

>NaNoWriMo ’08 : 100,000 in 30 days… anyone else?

>
black birdfall leaves centerblack bird

I failed my first year…did like 2,000 before I got bored with my plot.

I did 183,000 my second year… kind of to make up for failing the first year, but than never went back to edit it.

I reached 75,000 last year, but I never finished the story!

I get my no NaNo stories finished, so I there is no reason why I never finish my NaNo ones. Anyways…

This year… I’ll aim for 100,000 this year AND finishing the book too!

This year, I’m doing something totally out of character for me:

    1) I’m determined to go with no plot, and no planning this year. My first 3 years I planned and plotted like crazy and than tossed it all aside to shoot from the hip instead, so this year, I’ve decided to not waste my time planning and see how good I do, just jumping in with: NO PLOT – NO PROBLEM! Like the NaNoWriMo slogan says. Will I make it without a plot? There’s only one way to find out, so I won’t know the answer until December 1st rolls around.

    2) With no plot and no plan, means I’ll be also going with no setting, and no characters too! So, I’m going to do a first for me, and write fanfiction (InuYasha). I’ve been writing for 28 years and never once have I ever written fan fiction, so this’ll be a BIG change for me. The way I figure is, if I do fan fiction, I’ll have a set of characters to work with, and that way I’ll be able to start writing. However, given my habit of dropping characters and adding new ones on a whim, it is highly likely that by the end of week one, it will no longer be fan fiction, but be a regular fiction instead. At least that’s the theory I’m going on. No idea wither my resulting finished story will be fan fiction when it’s done or not. Well just have to wait and see what popped out of my head once November gets here.

So, there you have it. What my plan for NaNo ’08 is.

InuYasha FanFic for NaNoWriMo 2008…???

Usually I write a 100% original novel for NaNoWriMo, which means creating a world and people for it and all the little things that need creating, which I love doing, however all that creating takes months of plotting and planning and designing, and let’s face it, this year my life is overflowing with waaay too many projects as it is! OMG!

I was almost not going to do NaNo this year, but I love doing NaNo so much, that I just can’t miss a year of it, so I was thinking, what if I just jumped past all the whole world and character creating part and wrote a fan-fic this year instead?

Well, me being a huge mega crazed super rabid fan of Sesshomaru, it only make sense that I should write an InuYasha fanfic. Problem solved, I can enter NaNo and not have to go through the whole character/world creating process. YAY! Plus I can rewrite the ending of InuYasha to the way *it should have been*.

:)

Anyways, I was wondering, is there any one else here planning to write Inu fanfic this year?

What’s your take on this? I’d love to hear what you have to say about this post. Leave a comment and share your views!

InuYasha FanFic for NaNoWriMo 2008…???

black birdfall leaves centerblack bird

Thank You Kitty

What do you think? Should I change my layout?

Each year when NaNoWriMo hits, I change my blog layout to match whatever my NaNoNovel will be about. Once January comes around, it returns back to this my “SHIVER” layout.

Well, it that time of year again… time for me to start thinking about what I’m going to write AND what my new layout will look like. This will be the third year of this (I used my older blog for my writing stuff before than). So, I’m wondering, what should my NaNoWriMo layout be this year? Any one have any ideas?

Background colors? Text colors? Link colors? Should I stay with the black and green? Should I match NaNoWriMo’s colors?

I’m in a Japanese mood so my NaNo entry is leaning towards being set in Japan this year… any ideas for a good “Japanese” feeling layout?

I’m open to any and all suggestions at this point. I want my new layout here on my blog by the opening day of NaNo sign ups, which is October 1st, 2008
